Multivitamins for children have become a very controversial topic, many parents wondering if it is not appropriate to give their children such a complex. Unfortunately, there is no consensus from the specialists on the need to administer a vitamin complex to children.
Experts tend to have different opinions about multivitamins taken by children who do not show signs of deficiency.
Those who disagree with them say that vitamins in large quantities are not needed for children, even the most greasy of them. On the other side are those who consider multivitamins a kind of "insurance policy" that can fill the gaps of a poor diet.
However, most experts agree that multivitamins can be very useful during convalescent periods and after certain illnesses. Multivitamins should only be taken as directed by the doctor who will analyze the health, physical development and deficiencies of the child.
If you decide to give your child a multivitamin complex, however, keep in mind that there are certain vitamins that should not be given in excess.
Vitamins not to be given in excess:
1. Vitamin A (especially if it comes from retinol, palmitate or acetate; if it comes from beta carotene, it's ok). Chronic surplus of this vitamin can create major health problems.
2. To a lesser extent, zinc can cause problems if it is over-administered. Too much zinc administered over long periods of time can cause problems with the immune system and lead to copper deficiencies.
To be sure this will not happen, be careful if your child's food (especially cereals) is somehow fortified with 100% vitamin A and / or 100% zinc.
If this is the case, and you do not want to give up fortified food with vitamin A or zinc, it is good not to add a complex of vitamins to them. If your child does not consume foods fortified with the above vitamins, you can offer him a multivitamin complex that also contains vitamin A and zinc.
If, after all, you think your baby needs more vitamins, choose some specially designed for children and avoid those that have high doses in the composition.
Multivitamins for children are also available in drops and usually contain: Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin D. They may also contain iron and other vitamins and minerals such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin E.
Vitamins in food
