Congratulations, you are in the third quarter! In just a short time, you will hold your baby in your arms.

The last trimester seems to go by the fastest, although it brings big changes in your body - you feel fully pregnant, your tummy is big, baby is moving strong and you have to get ready for birth. Also, from now on, the chances of the baby's survival are higher, if you happen to be born prematurely.

How big is the baby in the 28th week of pregnancy

In the week 28 of pregnancy your baby should weigh about 1,000 grams and be about 38 inches long. It's about as big as a hunt!

Pregnancy at 28 weeks: how your baby grows

Your baby can open his eyes, he can blink and he can perceive bright lights, but the sight is still developing. Only near the age of 1 year the visual system is fully formed.

The color of your baby's eyes is formed from now on, but the hue can still change, defining within the first 6 months of life, especially if you were born with blue or gray-blue eyes.

The brain continues to grow and grow in week 28. The baby now exercises many activities that he will do after birth: he takes his finger to his mouth and exercises his sucking reflex, blinking, moving his eyes, squeezing his fists, coughing, sucking, swallows. All these activities are reflexes and will help you a lot after birth. Later, in the first year of life, the child becomes aware of some activities that he does.

Baby continues to gain weight as fat continues to accumulate under the skin. He now sleeps after a regular schedule.

But its program does not resemble that of an adult or a newborn: it sleeps about 20-30 minutes at a time. Also, now comes REM sleep (with rapid eye movements). During this sleep, the baby dreams. Scientists believe that, from the womb, children dream.

What you need to know: Every baby develops slightly differently - even in your body. Our information is intended to give you a general idea about the development of your baby this week of pregnancy.

You're pregnant in 7 months.

What happens in your body during pregnancy week 28?

If you are like most women, you will probably gain about 5-7 kilos this quarter.

Also, since the baby's movements feel clear, starting this week doctors recommend counting them and comparing their number from day to day. Here's how to do it: Choose a time in the day when you know you're usually freer and you can rest, sit in bed on the left side and count your baby's movements until you reach 10. If he made 10 moves in less for two hours (at this point in pregnancy), then it is fine.

If you do this every day, at about the same time, but after a while you notice that something changes (take two hours for example and make less than 10 moves), then call the doctor.

Common symptoms at 28 weeks of pregnancy

You probably have lower back pain in the lumbar spine. If you have not had any of them and the pain has suddenly appeared, call your emergency doctor because it may be a sign of premature birth.

If it is not about premature birth, you can blame the back pain on enlargement of the uterus and hormonal changes. Another possible cause for back pain in pregnancy is the accumulation of extra kilos, which requires the column.

However, there are some remedies or precautions you can take to reduce or prevent back pain during pregnancy:

  • Avoid wearing very high heels or flat soles. You must wear something that will give you comfortable support, such as shoes with orthopedic sole or shoes with medium and thick heel. Maintains a correct, right posture;
  • Do not pick up heavy objects by yourself;
  • Sleep on a hard mattress or put a rigid board between the mattress and the bed frame;
  • When you must bend, it is good to bend from the knee, not from the waist;
  • Put a pillow behind you when you sit on the chair or choose a chair with a curved back;
  • Sleep on one side, with a pillow between your legs;
  • Massage your lower back and apply warm or cold compresses. The massage in the third trimester must be done by a professional with special qualification. Also, physical exercises can be recommended only to certain pregnant women who have risk-free pregnancies. If you feel good and your doctor allows you, you can do special exercises for pregnant women, especially during specially organized classes or you can walk half an hour or swim.

Also, during week 28 you may have difficulty breathing - baby presses more and more on the diaphragm and lungs, you may feel Braxton Hicks contractions or you may notice leaks in the nipples, as the body begins to produce the first milk for the baby - colostrum.

Analyzes and investigations in week 28 of pregnancy

During this period, you will probably visit your doctor every two weeks. Then, at 36 weeks, you will start going every week. Depending on the risk factors, your doctor may recommend you repeat the test for HIV and syphilis and take the chlamydia and gonorrhea tests to be sure of your health.

Also, this week the doctor may recommend you do the tests for the third trimester. Some of these analyzes are made with reference from the family doctor and consist of a repeat of some general analyzes that were done at the beginning of the pregnancy. Specifically, you may recommend: hemolymphogram, biochemistry (blood sugar, transaminases, creatinine, urea), coagulation tests, urine summary, uroculture, testing for certain infections and harvesting for streptococcal infection.

It is important to check if you have group B, genital or urinary tract infection. Streptococcus is commonly encountered in women and usually poses no problem. However, if the baby gets the infection at birth, it can cause severe illness such as pneumonia or meningitis.

Newborns have an undeveloped immune system and that's why it's good to protect your baby. The presence of streptococcus requires antibiotic treatment. The doctor may repeat the antibiotic treatment even at the beginning of labor.

If your first blood test showed that you have Rh negative, you will probably be given an immunoglobin injection to prevent the production of antibodies by your body, which could attack your baby's blood. If your baby is Rh positive, you will still get an immunoglobin injection after you are born.

What to do during week 28 of pregnancy

Birth is a very personal experience, and the decision belongs to the people you want almost at that time. Remember that in this case there is no "right decision". It depends on you and how comfortable you feel with those people. Invite relatives or friends only if you want, don't give in to begging.

Some women prefer to share this moment only with their partner, others invite their mother or other family members. Other women want their partner not even involved. It just depends on your wishes and preferences, because in the end, the most important thing is to feel relaxed and confident.

After giving birth you will need full help. You start to think now about the distribution of tasks among those who offer to help you, often new moms are too overwhelmed to do and coordinate household chores.
