8 tests for sperm analysis

Sperm or semen disorders are the main cause of infertility in men. These can be most easily identified by carrying out laboratory tests, in which the semen collected is subjected to special investigations.

Sperm volume

Sperm volume is one of the characteristics of sperm that physicians follow when analyzing semen. The aim is to measure the volume of semen from a single ejaculation.

Normal results: 2-5 ml to ejaculate

Liquefaction time

At the time of ejaculation, the sperm has a thick consistency, but in about 20 minutes it becomes liquid. The liquefaction time represents an important indicator of the man's health and his reproductive capacity.

Normal results: 20-30 minutes after collection (if longer, doctors will suspect a possible infection)

Amount or number of sperm

The spermogram includes, in addition to testing motility, morphology, sperm fructose, and measuring the amount or number of sperm that exists in one milliliter of semen.

Normal results: 20 million sperm per ml of seminal fluid / 0 sperm if the man has undergone a vasectomy.

It is usually considered that if the results of the analysis are below this value, the man is infertile. But doctors claim that it is not completely infertile. There have also been cases of men with less than one million sperm / ml of semen that managed to become paternal. But as the results indicate lower values, the chances of designing are lower.

Morphology of sperm

The test aims to identify the number of sperm in the semen that have a normal shape or structure.

Normal results: more than 30% of the total number of sperm have a normal shape or appearance.

Sperm motility

The motility is to detect the number of sperm moving in the semen.

Normal results: over 50% of the sperm are moving

The pH level of the semen

By testing the pH level, physicians try to identify the acidity (low pH) or sperm alkalinity (high pH).

Normal results: 7.1 - 8.0

Leukocyte concentration in semen

The semen of a clinically healthy man should not contain white blood cells or leukocytes. If doctors discover their presence, it means that there is an infection or problem and that fertility is affected.

The level of fructose in the semen

Fructose is a type of sugar that is normally found in sperm and has the role of generating energy for sperm.

Normal results: minimum 300 mg / ml of sperm

How is the semen sample collected?

For semen analysis, the doctor needs a sperm sample. The man undergoing medical evaluation is forced to ejaculate semen into a sterile container.

There are several ways in which semen sample collection can take place:

  • in a private hospital room, where the patient is offered a container and more incentives to facilitate erection and ejaculation (for example, pornographic films and magazines);
  • in his own home, by masturbation and ejaculation in a container bought from the pharmacy; the method is effective only if the man is close to the hospital, because it must be brought to the doctor for analysis within a maximum of 30 minutes after collection;
  • during sexual contact, by withdrawing the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation (coitus interruptus) or by ejaculating into a sterile condom, carefully cleaned previously of traces of lubricant or powder, which could influence the test results.
